9 Years of YTOP Global: From a Question to a Movement

Introduction

On April 17, nine years ago, YTOP Global did not start as an organization. It started as a question.

Why are young people choosing paths that do not reflect who they are?

This was not a vague question. It was an observation that was open and seen up close yet too distant for an answer.

Coupled with more questions like;

Why do students lose interest in their future before it even begins?

Why are talents ignored at the stage where they matter the most?

There have been cases of students being forced into careers they did not understand, young people carrying dreams that were not theirs and parents making decisions with good intentions but limited awareness.

And the result was clear.

Confusion, Disengagement and Regret.

That was a problem and that problem became the beginning of YTOP Global.

Where It All Started

Before YTOP Global had a name, structure, or recognition, it had conviction.

At the time, the founder was still an undergraduate student. But even before then, the work had already started. Conversations with younger students, guidance sessions with secondary school juniors, etc.

These were simple but intentional efforts to help them think for themselves, however, this was not planned as an organization.

It was an individual’s response shaped by personal experience. A response shaped by conflict at home over career choice. A response shaped by understanding what it feels like to stand between expectation and identity.

And that tension built clarity. Not perfect clarity. But enough to act.

The First Step: Taking the Message to Schools

The first real move was simple. Go to schools and talk to attending students.

No funding. No structure. No formal backing.

Just a message.

However, from the early proposal sent to schools, one idea stood out: “Talents’ Discovery before Career Choice.”

This became the foundation and a team was formed to engage students from JSS1 to SSS3. We created spaces where they could ask questions and helped them look inward before making decisions that would shape their future.

We believed one thing that drove everything strongly: If young people understand themselves early, they make better life choices.

The Early Days: Passion Without Systems

The first team started with a couple of friends who believed in the idea enough to show up.

We funded activities with personal savings, moved from school to school with limited resources, faced rejection and  made a couple of mistakes.

A lot of mistakes like not tracking participants  data or measuring impact properly and no clear structure.

However,  this didn’t deter the team’s spirit, because every time we stood in front of students, we saw curious minds who had lots of questions to ask, but no answers yet.

And that kept us moving.

From Movement to Structure

Over time, things began to change for the better.

We moved from scattered efforts to structured programs and began to define who we are.

YTOP Global became a youth-led organization focused on helping young people gain clarity, build skills, and take action.

We built programs around:

  • Leadership development
  • Career awareness
  • Financial literacy
  • Skill acquisition
  • Mentorship and coaching

We moved beyond just talking.

We started building systems.

Growth: Expansion, Lessons, and Reset

At one point, YTOP Global had presence in about 36 universities which looked like a huge success. However, it exposed a weakness.

There was no continuity structure.

As members graduated, chapters became inactive and activities needed to restart from scratch.

That forced a reset and we had to rethink growth beyond just expansion, but also sustainability.

An important lesson we learned was that impact is not about how far you spread. It is about how long your work lasts.

And that lesson has continually shapes how the organization builds from time to time.

Impact That Speaks

Nine years later, the numbers tell part of the story.

  • Over 70,000 young people reached
  • 100+ programs executed
  • Presence across 40+ locations
  • Activities spanning multiple states in Nigeria and beyond

But numbers do not tell everything. The real impact shows in quieter ways.

A student who changes their career path early.
A young person who gains confidence to speak and lead.
A volunteer who finds purpose through service.

That is where the work lives.

What Makes YTOP Global Different

We do not sit behind desks and design programs in isolation.

We go to the field.

We listen first.
We observe patterns.
We respond with practical solutions.

We do not assume. We engage.

This is why our work cuts across:

  • Schools
  • Universities
  • Communities
  • Young professionals

We build with people, not for them.

Building Communities, Not Just Programs

As the organization grew, we expanded into structured platforms:

  • A global community for learning and collaboration
  • A volunteering hub that turns effort into measurable impact
  • An alumni network that keeps people connected beyond programs

These systems have been designed to sustain growth and sustainability of every individual finding purpose and collaboration in a community

Where We Are Now

Today, YTOP Global stands as more than an idea.

It is a working system with a network of young people, professionals, and partners aligned around one goal;

To help young people move from potential to action.

We currently run large-scale school projects, including outreach across hundreds of schools in Nigeria.

As we continue to refine our model, continue to learn and build.

What Nine Years Means

Nine years is not just time.

It is:

  • Years of showing up without resources
  • Years of learning through failure
  • Years of rebuilding systems
  • Years of staying committed when growth was slow

It is proof that consistency matters more than speed.

What Comes Next

The problem we started with still exists.

Young people still struggle with direction.
Parents still influence decisions without enough guidance.
Systems still do not support early self-discovery.

So the work is not done.

The next phase is clear.

  • Scale with structure
  • Strengthen partnerships
  • Deepen impact, not just expand reach
  • Build systems that outlive individuals

A Call to Be Part of This Work

YTOP Global has grown because people chose to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Volunteers.
Partners.
Supporters.

If you care about the future of young people, there is a place for you here.

Not as an observer. But as a contributor.

Nine years ago, we asked a question.

Today, we are still answering it.

And we are not stopping.
